For centuries the annual arriving of the spawning cod from January till April has ment also the arrival of many fishermen to Mortsund and its surronding islands.
In the beginning the populated villages were situated on the islands like Brandsholmen and Gullholmen and also at Bårsundet. The sea connected – the mountains divided.

After the building of the road to Mortsund in the early twenties the fishingvillage here developed rapidly over the years and one knows of “rorbuer” having been built here as early as the end of the 19th century.

The first “rorbuer” hired out to tourist was by the Statle family in 1964.

Mortsund hosted its own postoffice and postal code until a few years ago.

Today the fish-factory in the port buys cod during the seasonal fishingseason in the winter and hangs the fish to dry for the Italian market, but also makes cod-liver oil and salted fish for Spain and Portugal.
